Developing Skills for Integrated Use of Language through Task Instructions

Lucilla Chau-Yee Wong

Abstract

This Paper discusses how the development of students' integrated language skills can be achieved through making use of task instructions as students are simultaneously guided in task interpretation. The paper begins by analysing the particular requirement of the new HKCEE English Language Paper III, which calls for a mastery of skills for integrated language use. This is followed by suggestions of how the skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing can be enhanced through the exploitation of task instructions. An added dimension of learner independence is also suggested for more advanced learning.
