Reform and Challenges of Mathematics Education at the Primary Level in Macao (Article written in Chinese)

Titus Siu-Pang LI

Abstract

There is no standardized Mathematics curriculum in Macao. Textbooks from Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland have been used in Chinese and English primary schools since the 20th century. In 1995, the Portuguese Macao Government introduced the first mathematics curriculum and initiated reform in primary mathematics education. The Macao SAR Government carried on the reform this century by conducting university and school partnership seed projects, and provided in-service and school-based specialist training to raise the professionalism of primary school mathematics teachers. Through historical analysis, this paper identifies eight difficulties and challenges to mathematics education at the primary level. Mathematics curriculum development and education reforms are part of a long term initiative. It is only when the Government, curriculum designers, teacher education institutes, experts, school authorities, teachers, textbook publishers and parents all work together with common beliefs and objectives that a realistic and enjoyable environment can be created for successful mathematics education.
