Doctor of Philosophy (Educational Administration and Policy)
The PhD. is a research doctorate that is pursued mainly through individual guided study with some supplementary coursework. PhD. students pursue their scholarly interests under the guidance of scholars who are appointed to enlighten, direct, and evaluate in accordance with international standards and the PhD. programme provides opportunity for promising individuals to pursue intensive specialisation in a specified area of educational studies. Their efforts in critical review of literature, formulation of ideas, research construction, and theory building will benefit from a variety of activities that include research seminars, coursework, comprehensive examination, and guided research for thesis.
PhD. students normally combine seminars with guided independent research in an individually designed course of study under the guidance of their academic supervisors and academic advisers. Advancement to candidature is conditional upon the passing of a comprehensive examination. Candidates should then submit, under the supervision of their thesis committees, their thesis proposals, complete their theses, and pass the oral defence within a prescribed period of time.
The program of education provides me with the opportunity to learn about, and carry out interesting research on education. We have interesting courses, excellent academic staffs, good facilities and conditions for study here, all which has given me much aspiration to work as an academic researcher. (Hou Yuna, Yr 3)
The experience of studying in the programme helped me in building a solid empirical basis for the theoretical descriptions in international perspective and in capturing the "real world" problem with Chinese education. Learner-centered teacher-student relationships and cross-disciplinary learning community developed my mind and soul. I achieved pleasure and enthusiasm for academic inquiry here. (Meng Liujin, Yr 3)
The program provides an academic community where I can interact with my supervisor, committee members, other teachers and peers. It contributes to the construction of my identity as a novice researcher and teacher educator. Three years’ PhD study not only enhances my academic and professional knowledge but also enables me to pursue the meaning of life. (Zhang Limin, Yr 3)
