Programme Requirements

Study Scheme (Applicable to students admitted in 2025-26 and thereafter; Subject to University’s approval)

1) Students are required to complete a total of 24 units for graduation.

(i) Required Courses

12 units
  • TESL6501 TESOL Curriculum and Methodology
  • TESL6502 Second Language Acquisition
  • TESL6503 Second Language Assessment
  • TESL6504 Research Methods in TESOL

(ii) Elective Courses (Note 1)

6 – 12 units
  • ENLT6701 Phonetics and Phonology for English Language Teaching
  • ENLT6702 Morphology and Syntax for English Language Teaching
  • ENLT6703 Spoken and Written Discourse for English Language Teaching
  • ENLT6704 Psychological and Social Perspectives on Language
  • ENLT6705 Literature in English
  • ENLT6802 Contemporary English Language Teaching Issues
  • ENLT6803 Reading and Writing – Teaching and Learning
  • ENLT6804 Listening and Speaking – Teaching and Learning
  • ENLT6805 Information and Communication Technology in English Language Teaching

(iii) Project

0 – 6 units
  •  TESL6600 Independent Research Project

24 units

Note 1: Students can choose to complete either 4 elective courses or 2 elective courses and 1 project.

Remark: Courses will be mainly taught in English. The medium of instruction will be subject to the availability of teachers.

 

2) Other Requirements

 Students must achieve a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.0 in order to fulfill the graduation requirement.
Students must fulfil the term assessment requirement of the Graduate School. A student who obtains a cumulative GPA below 2.0 in the preceding term will be put on academic probation. For details, please refer to Section 13.0 “Unsatisfactory performance and discontinuation of studies” of the general regulations governing postgraduate studies, which can be accessed from the Graduate School homepage: https://www.gs.cuhk.edu.hk/

Class Schedule

There are two terms per academic year. Term 1 is from September to December, and Term 2 from January to April. Classes are usually offered on weekday evenings and Saturday mornings.
