THE EDUCATION OF MEDICAL LIBRARIANS IN CHINA: THE CASE OF HUNAN MEDICAL UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF MEDICAL LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE

Abstract
Since 1987, the People's Republic of China has been developing a program for educating professional medical library and information science specialists to meet the growing demand for medical and health science information inside the country, to incorporate Western literature with that of traditional Chinese medicine, and utilize the high-technology equipment necessary for rapid information access. Hunan Medical University's program, under the administration of the Faculty of Medical Library and Information Science, combines medical training with library science training to produce professional specialists prepared to meet China's distinctive needs. This paper examines the current history of educational development (both professional and non-professional), the faculty and student body composition, and curriculum development within this institution and makes recommendations for the expansion and continued development of the edcational program in China.
