Main idea construction is one of the important tasks during the reading comprehension process. In this article, theories and empirical research on main idea comprehension of expository text was reviewed from the cognitive perspective. Important factors that would affect the process of main idea comprehension was discussed. Focusing on the problem of poor readers, some practical teaching instructions were then recommended to improve the reading abilities of poor readers through facilitating their reading skills and prior knowledge about text structure.
