Heredity and Environment: Implications for Teaching

Jimmy CHAN

Abstract

It has been recognized by neurologists and psychologists that a person inherits the characteristics of his parents through the genes in the chromosomes of the cells, and one of these characteristics is intelligence. It is also believed that the genes responsible for intelligence can only function properly with the right kind of constituents and in the right kind of genetical environment, i.e., the presence of the neighbouring genes. Hence, the right kind of nutrition needs to be supplied to the cells all the time. On the other hand, educational, social, and psychological stimulation is essential for the maximum development of intelligence. The role of the teachers is to provide this important external environment for the pupils, though they can do very little to improve the inborn potential of the pupils. It is very encouraging to note that the Hong Kong Government has acknowledged the individual differences of the pupils and the tasks of the teachers to render differential treatment to these pupils to bring out their very best.
