Admission Requirements

One-year Full-time
  1. Applicants shall hold a local or other recognized Bachelor’s degree* preferably with a major in a discipline relevant to the major subject applied for.
  2. Fresh graduates may also apply.
    Fresh graduates who have been offered conditional admission shall obtain a recognized Bachelor’s degree* before the offer is granted officially. Students should furnish the proof before commencing studies in September.

*Applicants with degrees awarded by overseas universities may be required to provide assessment report from the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) on the level of qualification obtained.

Two-year Part-time

A: Teaching Mode

  1. Applicants shall be a local full-time in-service teacher, and hold a local or other recognized Bachelor’s degree* preferably with a major in a discipline relevant to the major subject applied for
  2. Students admitted via Secondary / Primary programme part-time (teaching) mode should be a local full-time school teacher throughout their period of study, and should teach at least 6 class periods (secondary stream) or 8 class periods (primary stream) per week/teaching cycle, of which subject should be in a closely related field of their chosen major subject. If a teaching post is not secured during their study, students may be required to apply for deferred admission or suspension of studies. Students are required to look for a teaching practicum school by themselves.
  3. Students admitted via Early Childhood Education programme part-time (teaching) mode should be a serving teacher in early childhood education settings throughout their period of study, and should teach at least 3 hours per day, with minimum class size of 10 children. If a teaching post is not secured during their study, students may be required to apply for deferred admission or suspension of studies. Students are required to look for a teaching practicum school by themselves.

Applicants serving as a principal or vice-principal shall also follow this arrangement.

B: Non-teaching Mode

  1. Applicants shall hold a local or other recognized Bachelor’s degree* preferably with a major in a discipline relevant to the major subject applied for.
  2. Interested in switching to teaching profession

Applicants serving in a school but without teaching load may also apply via non-teaching mode. Students admitted via non-teaching mode should complete 2 blocks of 4-5 consecutive weeks of teaching practicum within 2 years, and complete the first block in their first year of study. Teaching practicum schools will be arranged by the Office of School Partnership and Community Engagement and students should make themselves available for the assigned TP period.

English Language Requirements for Admission

To fulfill the University’s minimum English language requirements for admission to postgraduate programmes, applicants should have:
 
a.   obtained a degree from a university in Hong Kong1 or taken a degree programme of which the medium of instruction was English; OR

b.   achieved scores in the following English Language tests2 as indicated:
i.      TOEFL: 550 (Paper-based)/ 79 (Internet-based/Home Edition);
ii.     IELTS (Academic): 6.5 (Test Centre based/Online);
iii.    GMAT (Verbal): Band 213;
iv.    GMAT Focus Edition (Verbal): Band 78; OR
 
c.   obtained a pass grade in English in one of the following examinations:
i.      Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (AS Level);
ii.     Hong Kong Higher Level Examination;
iii.    CUHK Matriculation Examination;
iv.  General Certificate of Education Examination (GCE) Advanced Level (A-Level) / Advanced Subsidiary Level (AS-Level); OR

d.   achieved Level 4 or above in the English Language subject of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE); OR

e.   obtained a recognized professional qualification4, provided that the examination was conducted in English.

 

Notes:

  1. This is based on the understanding that English is the medium of instruction of degree programmes offered by universities in Hong Kong. Moreover, graduates from universities in Hong Kong should have fulfilled the English language requirements of the institution concerned when they were admitted to the degree programmes. The CUHK Graduate School may request applicants to provide additional supporting documents to prove their English proficiency.
  2. TOEFL and IELTS scores are considered valid for two years from the test date. GMAT scores are considered valid for five years from the test date.
  3. GMAT (Verbal) Score with a threshold of 21 will be kept until the score validity phases out.
  4. The programmes/Graduate Divisions shall at their discretion to determine if such professional qualification can be accepted.

Remark: Classes are conducted in Chinese and/or English. Course materials may not be available in bilingual versions. Students should be proficient in both Chinese and English.
