Over the past decade, being a teacher in Hong Kong has transcended boundaries of subject knowledge. As a byproduct of whole-person development, I believe that majoring in BMED provides an ideal opportunity for pre-service teachers like me to explore our interests in education and become future leaders of transformation through leadership and innovation.

During lockdown in 2022, with the support of BMED, I initiated a mock paper giveaway for DSE students on BMED’s Instagram page, @cuhkbmed. This initiative soon evolved into a face-to-face mock examination on the CUHK campus in 2023, providing F.6 students with a free learning opportunity while allowing my fellow schoolmates to gain experience in question setting and teaching.

Although the mock examination was a huge success, I reflected upon my advocacy for learning beyond exams: I wanted to have more fun in teaching and learning. With this in mind, I presented in several international education conferences, focusing on topics such as curriculum leadership (BELMAS 2023), teacher collaboration (AERA 2024), teacher education (BERA 2024), and dialogical pedagogy (BERA 2024). The ties I have built with the international community have sharpened my teaching skills and enriched my future career as a teacher and educator.

Apart from presenting at conferences, I have also utilised my time in CUHK to engage in overseas social service. In December 2023, I travelled to Cape Town, South Africa, to participate in a feeding programme for teenagers living in shacks. Many of these young people lacked access to proper education, making it difficult for them to find a job in the labour market and leading some to turn to drug abuse and sexual exploitation. In the following year, I travelled to Hanoi, Vietnam, to work on a project aimed at promoting sustainable tourism in the village of Da Bia. We constructed check-in frames with bamboos and painted walls with traditional Vietnamese designs. While I enjoyed the hands-on work and the chance to step away from the hustle and bustle, I realised that the impact of such initiatives can be limited compared to the transformative power of education. The empathetic heart and sense of global citizenship I cultivated during these exposures have empowered me to advocate for educational equity, inspiring learning environments that enable all students to thrive and reach their full potential.

This year, I am glad to receive CUHK’s Outstanding Students Award in Special Achievement. Upon receiving this award, I remain fully committed to harnessing my experiences to inspire future generations and creating impact through education.
