Message from the Programme Coordinator

Since 2012, our Bachelor of Education in Mathematics and Mathematics Education (Double Major) or BMED programme has begun its mission of preparing and cultivating collaborative, proactive, and innovative educators. To date, over a hundred of our graduates have lived their dreams of practicing as school mathematics teachers across primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong.

What’s more, in 10 years since our first intake, BMED has become one of the top teacher education programmes in Hong Kong. Currently, we are the only local 5-year BEd programme offering comprehensive teacher training in secondary mathematics education, and we have gained distinguished reputation from industry and administrative stakeholders. Our students and graduates have proven to strive for excellence in their academic studies and professional practices, having been recognised in major awards and scholarships, such as Hong Kong Outstanding Prospective Teachers Award, Honours at Entrance, CUHK Outstanding Students Award, and HSBC Oversea Scholarship. Within CUHK, our programme has recently topped all other programmes in Arts, Education, and Social Science in Best-5 JUPAS admission score in 2021-22. Our students uniquely undertake a double-major programme, which prepares them to be both well versed in subject matter and pedagogical (content) knowledge. Beyond course learning, they are engaged in a variety of programmatic and experiential learning activities to enhance their student life, such as CU in the CLOUD: Mathematics Education (a YouTube Channel) and BMED Academy (@cuhkbmed), while sharing the fun and joy of mathematics learning with diverse student audience.

To summarise, BMED is much more than learning to teach mathematics. It is a place where we come together to innovate new approaches for mathematics pedagogy; pursue one’s goal of making mathematics teaching and learning meaningful, reflect and act upon what it means to be a mathematics educator, and expand one’s horizon about what mathematics education can offer to better the society we live today. Thanks to the effort and dedication of our students, alumni, teachers, and programme administrators, I am so fortunate and proud to witness BMED’s developments. I, myself, completed my BEd in mathematics education in 2000s. Today, with the same passion and enthusiasm as I entered my BEd journey, I welcome you to the wonders of mathematics education in BMED and thank you for your interest in our Programme.
