Message from Programme Coordinator

Bachelor of Education in Mathematics and Mathematics Education (or BMED) is an interdisciplinary programme co-organized by Faculty of Education and Department of Mathematics, CUHK. It is a double major undergraduate programme. Students acquire solid mathematical knowledge and receive theory-practice integrated teacher training. Our teachers are well known scholars in mathematics, mathematics education or educational studies. We also engage in professional services of various types. By means of lectures, school experience and teaching practicum at secondary schools, our students acquire both mathematics knowledge and teacher professional knowledge, develop transferable skills of various types, and be equipped with the ability to assume leadership roles in mathematics teaching. Graduates will be awarded a Bachelor of Education degree with a double major in Mathematics and Mathematics Education, including a qualification equivalent to a Postgraduate Diploma in Education and will be qualified to teach in secondary schools at Hong Kong.

This programme ranks among the top undergraduate programmes at CUHK and has repeatedly achieved excellent results in Best-5 JUPAS admission score. Since its launch in 2012, this programme has been dedicated to nurturing secondary school mathematics teachers and educators who are professional, collaborative, and innovative. Our students and graduates consistently demonstrate outstanding academic performance and professional practice. They are having been recognized in various awards and scholarships such as Hong Kong Outstanding Prospective Teachers Award, Honours at Entrance, CUHK Outstanding Students Award, and HSBC Oversea Scholarship. They are highly sought and welcomed by employers in the educational field. This remarkable achievement is not only rooted from our balanced curriculum on “mathematical knowledge” and “pedagogical content knowledge,” but also from the various practical opportunities we provide. In addition to the mandatory teaching practicum, students may also participate in experiential learning activities such as CU in the Cloud, Mathematics Education (YouTube Channel) and BMED Academy (@cuhkbmed). These experiential learning opportunities enable our students to interact with secondary school students from diverse backgrounds and enrich their teaching experience by sharing the joy of learning mathematics.

No matter you are a local or non-local student, as long as you love mathematics and aspire to become a secondary school teacher, we warmly welcome you to apply for this programme. It is the first and crucial step in your journey of mathematics education!
