English Teachers' Attitudes: Comparison between the Veteran and the Novice

Eva Fung-kuen Law

Abstract

A questionnaire on teachers' attitudes toward the use of English and the medium of instruction, and on their English proficiency was given to three groups of new English language teachers. Their responses were compared with those expressed by a group of veteran teachers in a similar study conducted two years ago. It was found that both groups of teachers had similar views even though their teaching experience differed. They all accepted the use of mixed code in teaching certain subjects and they considered the role of English language important in Hong Kong, There was also an open-ended question in the survey and samples of writing were collected. The content was analysed to reveal what teachers considered to be ideal in a Hong Kong classroom. The writing was also analysed for linguistic performance by concordancing.
