In Memory of Professor Chung Yue Ping

The funeral service will be held on 19 July 2025 at 10:30am (reception starts at 9:30am) at Sanctuary 1/F, Methodist International Church, 271 Queen’s Road E, Wan Chai. All who wish to pay their respects are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Professor Chung’s memory will be made to REACH — the charity founded by his daughter Vivian and her husband — which provides quality learning opportunities for underserved kindergarten students. It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of Professor Chung Yue Ping, Former Dean of the Faculty of Education at the CUHK, on 4 July 2025. It is a huge loss to all educators in Hong Kong and the Society.

 

Professor Chung was a distinguished educator, a visionary leader, and a cherished mentor to countless students and colleagues throughout his illustrious career. Professor Chung joined the CUHK in 1978, where he quickly established himself as a leading figure in educational research and policy development. His passion for learning and teaching inspired many, and his research has had a lasting impact on educational practices both in Hong Kong and beyond.

 

Professor Chung served as the Dean of the Faculty of Education at the CUHK from 1997 to 2003, and he was instrumental in shaping the faculty's vision and strategic direction. Under his leadership, the Faculty expanded its programmes and initiatives, fostering an environment that encouraged innovation, collaboration, and academic excellence. Following his tenure as Dean, Professor Chung continued to make significant contributions to the Faculty as the Programme Coordinator of the Postgraduate Diploma in Education Programmes until his retirement in 2013. His enduring commitment to educational excellence and student development left a lasting impact on the Faculty and its community.

 

Beyond his administrative achievements, Professor Chung was deeply committed to student welfare. He believed in the importance of nurturing the next generation of educators and took great pride in mentoring students, helping them to realize their potential and encouraging them to pursue their dreams. His door was always open, and he was known for his kindness, patience, and understanding.

 

Professor Chung's contributions extended beyond the university. He served on numerous educational committees and advisory boards, influencing policy decisions and advocating for effective educational reforms. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to education, Professor Chung received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, and he was appointed the Justice of the Peace by the HKSAR Government in 2001. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of educators and scholars.

 

As we mourn the loss of a remarkable educator and leader, we will always remember Professor Chung’s enduring impact on the field of education and the community. The Faculty will honor his memory by continuing to uphold the values and vision he championed throughout his career.
