The Lee Hysan Lecture in Education – Reviewing Research on Practical Approaches for Schools concluded successfully on 9 March, attracting a total of more than 50 scholars, researchers and specialists from different universities as well as local secondary schools' teachers and students to Faculty of Education of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Prof. Robert E. Slavin, Director of the Centre for Research and Reform in Education at Johns Hopkins University and Chairman of the Success for All Foundation, was invited to be the speaker for the Lecture in this year. In the 2-hour Lecture, Prof. Slavin explained how the introduction of research reviews could promote the use of evidence in education.
In the reform of Evidence-based education, educators are encouraged to enhance their teaching performances by applying evidence-based researches results practically. Nevertheless, principals and teachers have limited time to review up-to-date researches in daily lives, and most of them are not equipped with relevant training for applying the findings in daily lessons. Therefore, fair, accurate and easy-to-read research summaries of "what-works" are essential for raising their teaching standards.
In the lecture, Prof. Slavin also introduced the recent advance of Evidence-based research in US and ways of writing high-quality summaries of researches. He raised a discussion among participants including scholars, teachers and students, which strengthened the linkage between research and practical experience.
