New technologies are revolutionizing education. At this critical juncture in an increasingly complex and competitive world, we need to re-imagine learning design and ride on the power of emerging learning technologies in order to enhance learning environments and improve outcomes. Learning design is a rapidly growing industry that applies to all sectors. In the rapidly evolving education landscape, no effort should be spared to nurture the next generation of learning technology specialists who possess in-depth theoretical and practical perspectives of learning design and demonstrate state-of-the-art technological knowledge and skills to shape the future of education.

The Bachelor of Science (Learning Design and Technology) Programme (JUPAS code: JS4386) is a 4-year integrative programme jointly offered by the Faculties of Education, Engineering and Science. Its design is based on the latest re-formulation of the science of education in which education is cast as “a metadiscipline or discipline of disciplines” to equip learners with knowledge, competencies, and leadership to facilitate learning and development in and beyond the formal education settings. Graduates of the programme will be equipped with multi-disciplinary knowledge in education, technology, and science with education and learning sciences serving as the unifying threads. Not only will students be provided with internship opportunities to consolidate theory-practice integration, but they will also carry out research projects to synthesize multi-disciplinary knowledge and action-science competencies.

Upon completion of the programme, students will have:

  1. mastered the latest theoretical underpinnings of learning design and the foundational know-how of the cutting-edge learning technology; (K)
  2. gained inspirational insights into design, implementation and evaluation of technology-supported learning; (K/S)
  3. demonstrated competent technological and pedagogical skills to take on challenges in a rapidly changing world; (S)
  4. acquired a critical and creative mind to approach real-world problems with original and innovative solutions; (K/S)
  5. investigated issues from multiple perspectives through engaging in transformative learning opportunities, such as self-directed/collaborative research studies, educational/technological internships, authentic community-based service learning and organizational leaderships; (K/S/V) and
  6. developed the essential mindset and skillset that foster technological innovation and excellence in the field of education or other related areas. (K/S/V)

Graduates of the programme can pursue professional careers in schools, school-sponsoring bodies, universities, government sectors, non-governmental organizations (especially those specializing in solving social problems by means of education), education-related companies and industries in local, regional, and global settings including the Greater Bay Area. Graduates are equipped to serve in a variety of settings where there is an interface between education and STEM, including industries, businesses, schools, non-governmental organizations, and other new and emerging education-related industries. Additionally, graduates who want to pursue a teaching career can continue their study in the teacher professional programmes to obtain a technology- and/or science-related teaching qualification.

CUHK Programme Taster Fair 2025

The LDTE programme held a mini-lecture titled “Use technology to design learning” for Secondary 4 and 5 students on 12 April 2025. Professor Thomas Chiu, the LDTE Programme Co-ordinator delivered how to use technology to design learning. Admissions requirements, programme features and career prospects of the LDTE programme were also highlighted. 


CUHK Information Day for Undergraduate Admissions 2024 – Admission Talk

The LDTE admission talk has successfully concluded in the CUHK Information Day for Undergraduate Admissions on 19 October 2024. The talk was delivered by LDTE Programme Co-ordinator and well received by secondary school students, parents and teachers, in which programme features, latest admission requirements and career prospects were highlighted.


LDTE Programme Talk

The LDTE programme is pleased to receive some senior secondary school students on 21 November 2023, and have the LDTE Programme Co-ordinator to deliver a programme talk on the future education trend, future workforce in digital and STEM education, as well as programme features and admission requirements. A current LDTE student is also invited to share her learning experiences with the participating students.

STEM Talent Scheme

Starting from 2024 entry, the LDTE programme will select and admit students with broad and in-depth exposure and achievements in STEM under the STEM Talent Scheme.

Achieved in HKDSE at least 3 Stars (e.g. Level 5*5*5* or 5**5*3 or 5**5**5**) in 3 STEM elective subjects

STEM Elective Subjects

Biology / Chemistry / Physics / M1 or M2 / Information and Communication Technology / Design and Applied Technology

Admission Arrangements

Applicants who have fulfilled the basic requirements and placed the LDTE programme as one of their top JUPAS choices will be reviewed under a dedicated selection panel for special consideration.

Such special consideration will be extended to JUPAS applicants who fail to fulfil the University minimum entrance requirements in the 4 core subjects. Selection interview may be granted and admission results will be announced via JUPAS.

This scheme may also cover other STEM achievements and qualifications such as well-established/international awards and other non-JUPAS qualifications on a case-by-case basis.

Outreach Activities 

Admission Interviews 

Shortlisted candidates, either apply through JUPAS, Non-JUPAS (Local) Admissions Scheme or International Students Admission Scheme, may be invited to attend an admission interview.
