Taipei-Observation of English lessons

Angela Tang

All the schools were unique in terms of their campus design, utilization of resources and eduational goals. Yet, they all gave me the same impression - from prinicipal to staff,k they are all enthusiastic, sincere and dedicated, upholding students' interest as their top priority. The most impressivething was that professionalism was displayed in the periodic school magazines in which students' works and activities in different aspects as well as teachers' articles of personal perspectives and academic research papers were published.

Students' activities and curiculum were diversified and innovative. The typical one was Taipei Wego Private Senior High School, whose belief is that 'no children are school failure'. Every effort was made to provide students with a successful experience by respecting individual's uniqueness and differences. Students were encouraged to explore their own values and goals in life by discarding the traditional andrigid thinking model. We paid a visit to the Primary section of this school first. Reciting quality classics of both Chinese and English involving added rhythm is emphasized. The kids of Primary 2 and 3 showed off their reciting skills in the mist of enjoyment. There were researches to support th efact that such reciting could enhance kids' brain development and their writing of articles showed a high degree of maturity.

To enhance students' foreign language competence, life skills and potentials, Wego Senior High School designed the exclusive 'Mountain Programme' for the students, involving a one-day excursion to the nearby Yang Ming Mountain(¶§©ú¤s) to experience the nature with their foreign teachers from all over the world. Summer programmes were also available, including a series of international courses with overseas universities to expand students' global vision as well as strengthen their command of English. The use of IT had its important role to play in the school curriculum as a tool of learning and keeping the students abreast of the latest development of information. It was amazing that by the end of the school year, every student received a VCD in which his or her whole year's school life was recorded! Nobody would invest such resources, if they had no concern for the students.
