Teacher Professional Development Program
The TDSpLD team has run 13 classes for the teacher development program for the academic year 2008-09. Altogether 2,305 teachers from 455 local schools have completed the training since the program began in 2006. The major objectives of the 5-day development program are to enhance participants’ understanding of the psychology of children in language acquisition, with an aim to promote quality language teaching; and to equip participants with the skills to provide small group supplemental instruction and individualized intensive instruction. The program also attempts to enhance participants’ counseling skills in dealing with the emotional and family problems encountered by students with specific learning difficulties.

Course Instructors, Ms. Chiu Lai-yi and Ms. Lai Wai-yee attended the 35th Annual International Academy for Research in Learning Disabilities (IARLD) Conference in Taipei. The Conference offered updated information on research and support of students with learning disabilities in different countries. Ms. Chiu and Ms. Lai had fruitful exchanges with Conference participants.
     
     
  International Conference : Research in Reading Chinese and Related Asian Languages (RRC) Conference

Prof. Cheng Pui-wan attended the Research in Reading Chinese and Related Asian Languages (RRC) Conference held at the University of Toronto, Canada and presented a poster on the research findings of "Literacy Enhancement and Peer Support (LEAPS)".
     
     
  Number of Participants of Teacher Professional Development Program Hits 3,000

With continued support from the principals and teachers since the beginning of the teacher professional development program, the number of course participants has recently reached 3,000. During the certificate presentations for Class N in June 2010, the course instructor congratulated Mr Wong Wing Wo, a teacher of Shek Lei St. John’s Catholic Primary School, for being the 3000th teacher who completed the course. Apart from the certificate, Mr Wong also received a book written by Dr. Kwan Tze-hoi as encouragement.
     
     

  Visit from Taitung Yung-Ling Research Center for Reading Instruction

A team of the Yung-Ling Research Center for Reading Instruction with more than 20 members visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong for experience exchange on
27 April 2010. The half-day visit was divided into three parts. First, Prof. Tzeng Shih-jay and Prof. Chen Shu-li introduced the works of the Center in implementing remedial education programs in Taitung. Then, Prof. Cheng and the course instructors presented the conceptual framework, some of the core elements and the effect of the teacher professional development program in the "READ & WRITE" project with the topic "Supporting Children' Literacy Growth: Teacher Development for Quality Literacy Education". Last but not least, the two teams exchanged opinions on the support services for low-achieving students and the teacher training programs.
     
     
  Sharing Session: Love without Boundaries — Supporting Students with Special Educational Needs

Invited by the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council, Prof. Cheng attended a sharing session, "Love without Boundaries — Supporting Students with Special Educational Needs", at the Diocesan Boys' School on 13 March 2010 and delivered a talk to the audiences. In the talk, Prof. Cheng presented different approaches to supporting students with special educational needs and achieving quality classroom instruction. Prof. Cheng also took the chance to introduce the teacher professional development program in the "READ & WRITE" project.
     
     
  Stepping up to Life and Learning — Conference on Specific Learning Disabilities

Invited by the Pathways Foundation, Prof. Cheng attended a conference, "Stepping up to Life and Learning — Conference on Specific Learning Disabilities", at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University on 25 Jan 2010 and delivered a talk on "Bridging the Parent-child Gap: Family Support for Children with Dyslexia". In the talk, Prof. Cheng shared with colleagues in the education sector and the parents about how learning disabilities affected parent-child relations and the keys to achieving family harmony. Prof. Cheng also took the chance to introduce the teacher professional development program in the "READ & WRITE" project.
     
     
  The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) 60th Annual Conference

Prof. Cheng Pui-wan, together with the course instructors, Ms. Chiu Lai-yi and Ms. Chan Ching-king, attended the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) 60th Annual Conference in Florida, U.S.A. and in poster format presented the conceptual framework and outline of the “READ & WRITE” project.
     
     
EDB Seminar: "Early Identification and Intervention of Learning Difficulties Programme for Primary One Pupils"

Course instructor, Ms Luk Sau-ha, was invited by the Educational Psychology Service (New Territories) Section of EDB to attend a seminar on "Early Identification and Intervention of Learning Difficulties Programme for Primary One Pupils" and gave a presentation to the participants. In the seminar, Ms Luk introduced the theories of morphological awareness and strategies on effective vocabulary teaching to participating teachers and counsellors.
     
     
  International Conference: The International Conference on the Processing East Asian Languages (ICPEAL)

Prof. Cheng Pui-wan, together with the course instructors, Ms Luk Sau-ha and Ms. Chan Ching-king, and other team members of TDSpLD, attended the International Conference on the Processing East Asian Languages (ICPEAL) in Beijing, and in poster format presented the research findings on the learning of classifiers in primary school years in Hong Kong.
