My exchange year at the University of Bonn Germany, has been a truly transformative academic and cultural journey. As a mathematics education student, I was drawn to Bonn’s profound heritage in mathematical research, and this exchange far exceeded my expectations.
Academically, I immersed myself in rigorous seminars and discussion-based tutorials. Lecturers prioritised logical reasoning and independent inquiry instead of passive learning. I delved deeper into advanced topics including complex analysis and abstract algebra, benefiting from the university’s strong research culture and accessible academic resources. Communicating ideas with local and international peers sharpened my mathematical thinking and academic expression.
Beyond studies, I settled into life in this quiet, historic university town. I explored neighbouring German cities such as Berlin, Heidelberg and Cologne by regional trains, visited landmark sites, and learned about European history. Daily routines included shopping at local supermarkets and preparing meals greatly improved my cooking skills. In Hong Kong I have a fast-paced schedule with little time for workouts. In Bonn, I can stick to fitness and achieve what I once could not.
Moreover, I visited numerous countries this year such as Norway, France, Iceland, Italy. Planning trips, arranging transport and accommodation, and handling unexpected issues greatly improved my planning and problem-solving skills.
This experience is more than academic enrichment. It helped me develop an open, global mindset and courage to face unknown challenges. I hope my sharing can encourage you to take exchange chances, explore different academic systems, and gain unique growth overseas.
