"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." - William Butler Yeats

As a graduate of the PGDE program in the Faculty of Education, my learning journey has been both transformative and enriching. I am honoured to have received the Outstanding Academic Performance Award, which would not have been possible without the support and guidance of my professors, and principals, the unwavering encouragement from my loving family and friends. From the moment I set foot in the program, I was immersed in a vibrant educational community that fostered growth, collaboration, and a deep passion for teaching.

The program provided a comprehensive blend of theoretical knowledge and practical experiences that prepared us to become effective educators. Through engaging lectures, interactive workshops, and hands-on teaching opportunities, we gained a solid foundation in pedagogical theories, curriculum development, and classroom management strategies.

Throughout this learning journey, I have not only gained the necessary skills and knowledge to be an effective educator but also developed a strong sense of purpose and passion for teaching. The program has shaped me into a lifelong learner and a compassionate educator dedicated to making a difference in the lives of my students.

Reflecting on my time in the PGDE program, I am immensely grateful for the experiences, friendships, and growth I have achieved. The Faculty of Education has provided me with the foundation to embark on a fulfilling career in education, and the lessons and values instilled in me will guide me throughout my professional journey.

As we venture into the world as educators, let us remember the core values that brought us to this noble profession. Let kindness, compassion, and empathy be our guiding principles. Let us never lose sight of the unique qualities that make each student special, and let us strive to create inclusive and supportive learning environments where all learners can thrive.

The PGDE programme of the CUHK offers practical, transferrable skills for serving teachers and teachers-to-be, covering not just your own major subject, but also topics on class, system and school levels that are directly related to school teachers nowadays. I personally found the courses related to the adaptation for SEN students taught by current practitioners particularly insightful. It was great to learn that the instructors in the programme had solid teaching experience in schools and was a pleasant surprise to have met one of my former secondary school teachers and attended her class again!

At CUHK, the PGDE programme does not only offer comprehensive knowledge from curriculum design, classroom management, the needs of SENs, to the education system in Hong Kong and China, it is also a community where you can meet professors and tutors who give you insights and empower you; as well as like-minded, dedicated peers.

I particularly learned a lot in the curriculum and teaching course. I acquired substantial knowledge in teaching English. During my teaching practice, I was able to incorporate what I had been learning into my class and receive constructive feedback from professors. Graduated for a decade, I still find what I learnt from the PGDE course relevant to my everyday teaching life.

"Respect isn't gained but earned," said Professor Icy Lee, who was the professor of my curriculum and teaching course, on the last day of the course. This has been serving as a reminder and an encouragement to me throughout my teaching career. I am very grateful to have met the respectful role models from the programme.
