Dean's Message

Dear Members of the CUHK Faculty of Education,

As we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Faculty of Education at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the remarkable journey we have undertaken together. This milestone is not only a testament to our longevity, but a celebration of our unwavering commitment to excellence in education, research, and community service.

Over the past six decades, our Faculty has served the Hong Kong school community with distinction. We have trained countless educators who have made significant contributions to Hong Kong's education landscape. Among our alumni are leaders in the education community, dedicated school teachers at various levels, and a substantial number of school principals across Hong Kong. The impact of our Faculty on the education community has been profound, shaping the future of education in our city.

Our influence extends beyond Hong Kong. We have trained numerous researchers and scholars who now hold leadership positions in education institutions across mainland China. These individuals carry forward the knowledge and values they gained at CUHK, advancing education in the region and fostering cross-border collaboration and innovation.

In recent years, our Faculty has made steady progress in international rankings, reflecting its growing reputation on the global stage. We are proud to be recognised as one of the top-performing education institutions in the world. Our high rankings in education by multiple university ranking systems, such as Times Higher Education (THE), QS, and US News & World Report, are a testament to our dedication to academic excellence and our commitment to advancing the field of education.

As we look to the future, our vision remains clear: to be internationally recognised as a leading center for education research and teacher preparation. We are dedicated to nurturing prospective educators and education leaders with local, regional, and global perspectives, equipping them to transform education and address future challenges in a rapidly changing society. Our mission is to empower learners to become responsible and ethical agents of change, innovate with evidence-based research, and advance education through lifelong learning.

This anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on our achievements, celebrate our successes, and renew our commitment to our vision and mission. It is also a time to express heartfelt gratitude to all members of our community—students, faculty, staff, alumni, and partners—whose dedication and hard work have made these accomplishments possible.

As we embark on the next chapter of our journey, let us continue striving for excellence, embrace innovation, and working together to shape the future of education. I am confident that through our collective efforts, the Faculty of Education at CUHK will continue to thrive and make a lasting impact on the education community both locally and globally.

Thank you for being part of this incredible journey. Happy 60th Anniversary!

Warm regards,

FAN Xitao

CUHK Faculty of Education Achieves Significant Jump in THE World Subject Rankings

The CUHK Faculty of Education has achieved a significant jump in this year’s Times Higher Education World University Rankings, rising 8 places in the subject category of Education to rank 11th globally and 2nd in Asia.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025 for the Education subject category includes 767 universities worldwide. It highlights the institutions leading in education, teacher training, and academic studies in education. The scoring criteria encompass teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement, and international outlook.

From Classroom to Community: Pioneering Social Innovation

The CUHK Faculty of Education is transforming academic expertise into real-world impact through pioneering social enterprises established by its faculty members. These initiatives address critical gaps in education and social welfare—ranging from promoting high-quality experiential learning and child development to supporting individuals with special needs through innovative technologies.

By combining research-driven approaches with sustainable business models, the Faculty is extending its influence beyond the classroom and into the wider community. These ventures exemplify CUHK’s commitment to social responsibility, showcasing how universities can actively tackle societal challenges. Each enterprise is designed to be scalable, delivering long-term benefits to underserved groups while fostering collaboration between educators, professionals, and policymakers.

The Faculty’s leadership in social innovation underscores its role not only as an educator but also as a catalyst for inclusive progress in Hong Kong and beyond.

Learniversity: Advancing Equity and Innovation through Learning Technologies

With the support of the Sustainable Knowledge Transfer Project Fund (S-KPF) at CUHK, Learniversity—a social enterprise founded by Professor Morris Jong of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in April 2023—is dedicated to designing technology-based pedagogical solutions that address educational inequality and promote quality education. Leveraging the extensive research and technological innovations of the Faculty of Education, Learniversity integrates research-based learning technologies, such as EduVenture-VR®, EduVenture-Meta®, and VARPLE® to empower students with greater access to high-quality, experiential education.

Addressing Barriers to Experiential Learning

Experiential learning is a powerful approach to developing observation skills, boosting student motivation, and fostering self-directed learning. However, in many school settings, such opportunities are limited by rigid schedules, scarce resources, and accessibility challenges. These barriers restrict students’ exposure to authentic learning environments and exacerbate educational inequalities.

To tackle the mentioned issues, Learniversity was established to broaden the reach and deepen impact of research-based technologies for underserved students. By applying tools like EduVenture-VR®, EduVenture-Meta® and VARPLE®, it creates highly immersive and effective learning opportunities that help overcome physical, financial, and logistical barriers. These platforms foster a more inclusive, flexible, and engaging learning environments, empowering students from all backgrounds to meaningfully participate in experiential learning.

Fostering Cultural Understanding

One flagship initiative is a community project titled “Cultivating Cultural Understanding and Integration between Ethnic Minority and Chinese Students through EduVenture-VR®, funded by the HKSAR Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Fund (SIE Fund). This one-year project benefited 235 students from seven secondary schools. In collaboration with the CUHK Centre for Islamic Studies, the project offered lectures, workshops, virtual pre-trips, guided field visits, and reflection sessions to promote intercultural empathy and integration.

Over 85% of students reported an increased understanding of Chinese and Islamic cultures, greater appreciation for ethnic diversity, and deeper awareness of cultural similarities and differences. Notably, nearly 90% expressed a stronger willingness to bridge cultural gaps through respectful communication and open-mindedness. These outcomes highlight the project’s success in fostering meaningful cultural dialogue, breaking down stereotypes, and empowering students to embrace diversity with empathy and pride.

Nurturing Future Skills through Technology

Responding to the growing importance of computational thinking, Learniversity launched a series of drone coding courses for primary and secondary students. Conducted in partnership with seven schools, these courses introduced 197 students to block-based programming and drone control through simulators and real-world applications. Students also explored the use of drone in aerial photography and VR integration—an exciting combination of technical skills and creative exploration.

Most students reported increased confidence in programming and operating drones, as well as improved spatial awareness through the VARPLE® simulator. The hands-on learning experience was widely praised for its effectiveness in building practical skills and sparking interest in drone technology.

Enhancing English Language Learning through VR

To support English language development, Learniversity has launched the “EduVenture-Meta® English Advancement Courses” for both junior secondary and senior primary students, focusing on relatable themes such as friendship, environmental protection, and Hong Kong culture. What sets these courses apart is the innovative integration of EduVenture-Meta®, which transform traditional reading and writing tasks into immersive learning journeys.

By allowing students to "step into" scenes described in the texts—such as walking through a local heritage site—they gain contextualized exposure to language use in real-life settings. This immersive approach deepens comprehension and vocabulary acquisition while boosting motivation and engagement. Students become active participants in the narrative, enabling more meaningful practice in speaking, listening, and descriptive writing skills.

A Vision for Inclusive, Future-Ready Learning

Learniversity aims to reduce educational disparities and inspire meaningful learning through innovation. By combining pedagogical rigor with cutting-edge tools, it opens new pathways for students to explore, create, and connect with the world around them. As Learniversity continues to expand its impact, it remains committed to fostering an inclusive educational future where all learners can thrive—regardless of their backgrounds or circumstances.

Empowering Futures: The Impact of a Sport-Related Social Enterprise –

Physical Literacy Academy for Children and Youth (PLACY®)

In a society increasingly focused on health and fitness, the Physical Literacy Academy for Children and Youth (PLACY®) stands out as a beacon of hope and change. Established in April 2022 and funded by The Chinese University of Hong Kong, PLACY® is a pioneering social enterprise dedicated to fostering physical literacy among children and youth in Hong Kong. Its mission is clear: to nurture healthy, confident, and active individuals through comprehensive sports programs and assessments.

The Challenge

Physical literacy is often overlooked in educational systems that prioritize academic achievements. According to the Hong Kong 2022 Report Card, only 31% of children meet international standards for cardio-respiratory fitness. Alarmingly, fewer than 10% engage in the recommended 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily, as advised by the World Health Organization (WHO). These statistics underscore an urgent need for initiatives that promote physical activity and overall wellness among younger generations.

Additionally, there is a notable lack of standardised, well-developed programs for physical literacy and sports talent development in Hong Kong. Many children do not have access to resources that could help them understand the importance of physical activity in their lives. PLACY® aims to close this gap by providing structured programs that empower children and youth to take charge of their physical health.

PLACY®’s Innovative Approach

PLACY®'s approach is rooted in the concept of physical literacy, defined as the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge, and understanding to value and engage in physical activities throughout life. This holistic perspective emphasises not only the physical aspect of sports but also the mental and emotional dimensions of health.

Through its diverse offerings, PLACY® aims to instill a sense of responsibility and engagement in physical activities among children. The academy provides physical fitness assessments, sports talent certifications, and awards to recognise and encourage participation. By making these programs accessible, especially to disadvantaged groups, PLACY® seeks to broaden the pool of potential elite athletes and foster a healthier, more active community.

Programs and Services

PLACY® offers a range of programs tailored to different age groups and needs:

  1. Children and Youth Programmes: These initiatives focus on developing fundamental movement skills, enhancing physical fitness, and nurturing sports talents. By engaging children in fun and interactive activities, PLACY® fosters a love for sports and movement.
  2. PLACY® Professional Development Programme for Adults: This program is designed for educators and coaches, equipping them with the tools and knowledge to effectively teach physical literacy. By training assessors, PLACY® ensures that the next generation of trainers is well-prepared to inspire young athletes.
  3. Assessment and Certification: PLACY® conducts assessments to identify and develop sports talents, providing children with feedback on their physical capabilities. This not only aids talent development but also boosts children's confidence as they gain recognition for their efforts.
  4. Community Engagement: PLACY® actively collaborates with local schools and strategic partners, creating a network of support for physical literacy initiatives. Through these partnerships, PLACY® amplifies its impact, reaching more children and families in need.

Measuring Impact

Since its inception, PLACY® has made significant strides in promoting physical literacy. In its first year alone, the academy trained numerous assessors and engaged over 1,000 participants to its assessment programs. These figures highlight a growing recognition of the importance of physical health among the youth.

Looking ahead, PLACY® plans to introduce Level 3 courses in early 2025-26, further expanding its offerings and influence.

A Vision for the Future

PLACY®’s commitment to nurturing a healthier, more active generation is vital. By addressing barriers to physical literacy and providing comprehensive support, PLACY® not only enhances individual well-being but also contributes to a more vibrant and engaged community.

As Hong Kong continues to face challenges related to health and fitness, initiatives like PLACY® are essential in reshaping the landscape. By empowering children and youth through physical literacy, the academy fosters not just athletes but also healthy, confident individuals who can thrive in all aspects of life.

PLACY® is a transformative force in Hong Kong. Its innovative programs, dedicated team, and community-focused approach exemplify the power of social enterprises to drive meaningful change. As PLACY® continues to grow and evolve, it will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the future of physical health and literacy in the region.
