2026SPR-S33 How to successfully study law and become a successful lawyer in an AI age*
Content
Hong Kong, as any society, needs good lawyers. However, with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), many have predicted, seemingly with some glee, the end of lawyers. Many predict lawyers will be replaced by AI legal assistants or robo-lawyers. It should be noted these predictions have come mostly from those trying to sell AI. Hong Kong, and the world, will continue to need good lawyers. This course is designed for those who are interested in pursuing the study of, and perhaps, eventually, a career in law. The course aims to assist these students to further develop their existing skills and to develop new skills which will assist them in successfully studying and practicing law. The course emphasises the human skills that machines cannot replicate or match. The course beings with an introduction to the essential skills needed to be developed to successfully study law and how these skills can be honed to transition the law student to become a successful lawyer. Although the course emphasises skills over substantive knowledge, some substantive legal study is required, but this will be developed using a non-traditional self-reliant research approach, making use of technologies such as AI. Students will be familiarised with the most important principles of court procedure, civil and criminal, and basic rules of evidence. Students will interview their clients, developing the client-handling skills required for the successful practice of law. They will research and answer the practical and legal questions that arise from these interviews. The information they obtain from their client and their legal research will then form the basis of the materials they will use in mock negotiations among themselves to try to assist their clients in solving their problems without going to court. Unlike real-life unfortunately, these negotiations are doomed to failure, as this negotiation and the consideration of various other forms of alternative dispute resolution, will then be followed by training in court presentation skills, witness handling, and forensic procedure and etiquette for the inevitable court battle. The course will culminate in a mock trial run by the students.
