2024SPR-S30 Creative Digital Art Classroom─Tessellations for Beginners*
A tessellation is the covering of a plane using one or more geometric shapes, called tiles, with no overlaps and no gaps. Such geometric patterns are very common among Islamic art since ancient time. Some digital artists consider such constructions in effect algorithms, making Islamic geometric patterns the forerunners of modern algorithmic art. One can extend this concept to higher dimensions through a variety of geometries in mathematics. This course is designed for gifted students who are interested in mathematics, geometric design, Islamic culture and information technology. Contents of this course include periodic and a-period (Penrose) tiling as well as the basics of Escher artworks. The instructor will guide the students to learn while doing, so they could master these complicated tessellation techniques. The course will focus on enhancing the students' artistic and logical senses as well as their creative and design ability.

2024SPR-S45 Future Law: Can Law Protect us from Science, Technology and the Metaverse?*
This course will consider the challenges facing our world as science and technology advances at a rate that outpaces the law which is intended to protect and serve us. The course will consider the problems facing law and lawyers when they are asked by clients to deal with the issues and benefits that scientific and technological advances bring. We will consider the latest advances and anticipated advances in science and engineering, and the ethical and legal issues that may follow. In particular the course will consider (a) advances in medicine: research using embryos and stem cells, DNA mapping, bioengineering, medical and pharmacological breakthroughs and profit, the issues that arise from living longer or even forever; (b) making humans and super humans: in vitro fertilization, genetic engineering and bionics; (c) resurrecting the dead: cryonic preservation; (d) saving the planet and feeding the world: no plastics, limitless clean energy and genetically modified foodstuffs; (e) making machines think: from self-driving cars and automated weapons to independent artificial super intelligence (including the replacement of lawyers and judges); (f) space exploration and colonization; (g) extra-terrestrial visitors; (h) the internet and information: free-access, privacy, fake stories and policing the internet; and (i) semiconductors, 5G technology, and supercapacitors: the internet of everything. All of these advances and possibilities bring ethical considerations and concerns, and may raise legal issues which will be discussed in the course - particularly they may identify gaps in the law as advances in science and technology raise issues that have never been considered before. The course will also consider the impact of the global pandemic, COVID-19, on the law and being a lawyer. In conclusion we will consider the future for law and lawyers with more use of technology in law and the claim that we may be facing the end of lawyers.
