Advertisements are ubiquitous in today’s world. We see ads everywhere, be it on TV, in newspapers or magazines, in streets, buses, MTR stations, etc. In our culture of rampant consumerism, we are all targets of advertisements which seek to mold our outlooks, our values and habits. It is therefore essential to develop in young people an awareness and understanding of how advertising works. The main objective of this course is to help students acquire the necessary tools to recognize and analyze advertisements and become media savvy and cognizant consumers of information and products. Using real life examples they encounter in their daily lives, the class will learn about the basic elements of advertising such as the target audience, and the various techniques and strategies (both visual and textual) used to appeal to particular audiences. In the decoding of the adverts, students will get to understand not only their various messages, but also, and more importantly, to unravel the values that they sell and the assumptions embedded in the media images. Some of the issues we will examine are: what are the explicit and implicit messages in the ads? Who do they target and why? What values, lifestyles, and points of view are represented in the ads? What techniques and strategies are used to create the messages? In each lesson, students will be given the tasks to analyze the different elements of actual advertisements and present their findings in small group discussions. This course is designed for students who are interested in acquiring strong critical and analytical skills, sharpening their interpretative ability, and engaging in reflective and independent thinking.

2024WIN-S47 Safeguarding Cultural Heritage in Hong Kong─Asia's Heritage City*
Surprisingly, as one of the world’s most modern cities, often thought of as a city of skyscrapers, Hong Kong has an incredibly rich and diverse cultural heritage. This is reflected in its wide diversity of old and relatively new buildings and monuments; from ancient temples and walled villages, through to Tai Kwun, Heritage 1881 and Norman Foster’s HSBC Building. Hong Kong also has many museums and galleries containing important representations of Chinese and other cultures which were important in the development of modern Hong Kong. These range from treasures and works of art, through to the more seemingly mundane legacy of Hong Kong’s colonial history, but also evidence its pre and post-colonial heritage. This course considers the issues, and the legal and other protection affecting cultural heritage in Hong Kong. Among other topics, the course will consider: built heritage; antiquities and other forms of portable heritage; the history of looted heritage (including Hong Kong’s role in the illicit trafficking of looted heritage from China); shipwrecks, pirates, and treasure hunters; and, the newest recognised form of cultural heritage, intangible cultural heritage, including Hong Kong’s rich heritage of Cantonese opera, bamboo scaffolding, neon signs and milk tea.
