It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Chung Yue Ping, who departed on 4 July 2025.
Professor Chung joined The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 1978, and served the University with unwavering dedication for over three decades. He held numerous leadership positions including Professor in the Department of Educational Administration and Policy, Dean of the Faculty of Education, Director of the Centre for University and School Partnership, and Chairman of the Graduate Division of Education. Upon his retirement in 2013, he was honoured with the title of Emeritus Professor, in recognition of his distinguished service and contributions.
An esteemed scholar and well-known researcher, Professor Chung specialized in the economics of vocational and technical education, cost-benefit analysis and evaluation in education, and the finance of higher education. His prolific academic work greatly enriched these fields and remains influential. Throughout his career, he served as a guest professor at Peking University, Nanjing University, and Suzhou University, and was a visiting scholar at Stanford University.
Beyond his scholarly achievements, Professor Chung was a passionate and outstanding educator. He began his career teaching in primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong and went on to mentor over 15 doctoral students, many of whom have become academic leaders in mainland China and Hong Kong. His excellence in teaching was recognised with the Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award in 2010.
In 2001, Professor Chung was appointed as a Justice of the Peace by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government—an esteemed recognition that highlights his outstanding contributions to education policy and reform. This prestigious appointment reflects his unwavering dedication to the advancement of the education community and his influential role in shaping the future of education in Hong Kong.
As we mourn the loss of a remarkable educator, scholar, and leader, we will forever remember Professor Chung’s enduring legacy and the profound impact he made on the field of education and on those who had the privilege to learn from and work with him.
The Department of Educational Administration and Policy will continue to uphold the values and vision that Professor Chung championed throughout his career.
May he rest in peace. Our deepest condolences to Professor Chung’s family during this difficult time.
