郭教授的研究兴趣十分广泛，包括以批判角度研究及理解教育政策、课程改革、教师教育以及社会正义与公平。就研究风格而言，郭教授积极主张打破学科界限，以探索复杂的社会现实。 郭教授的学术工作受到了各科理论启发：人类学、欧陆哲学、文化研究、科学与科技研究、后殖民研究、精神分析甚至神学。 郭教授问，我们如何才能从看似不切实际的社会理论和哲学中寻找失落了的见解，并提出新的问题，从而重新构想教育研究、教学实践和学校领导？

郭教授也是澳洲布里斯本格里菲斯大学的兼任研究员，参与一项长期资助项目，在该项目中，大学学者与昆士兰州贫困地区的教师、家长和小区组织合作，并共同开展研究。 在此之前，郭教授曾在香港公开大学（现为香港都会大学）及在两所本地中学任教。
